RECONNECT Virtual Roundtable: Global Trends in the Rule of Law – Challenges for the European Union

As we enter a new decade, troubling developments around the rule of law continue to raise concerns for the future of fair and functioning societies in Europe and around the world. Since 2009, the World Justice Project has documented these trends in its annual WJP Rule of Law Index, now covering 128 countries and jurisdictions in the new 2020 edition. Based on surveys of more than 130,000 households and 4,000 legal practitioners and experts worldwide, the 2020 Index provides citizens, governments, donors, businesses, and civil society organizations with a comprehensive comparative analysis of countries’ adherence to universal rule of law principles.

Please join the Leuven University’s Centre for Global Governance Studies, the World Justice Project, and the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law as we delve into the findings from the WJP Rule of Law Index 2020. WJP’s chief research officer will review important insights and data trends in and outside Europe. This will be followed by a panel discussion with experts and officials from the European Union on the main implications for the EU and what the EU is and should be doing to address rule of law concerns internally and externally. After these remarks, the panelists will engage with the audience.

Lunch will be served from 12:00 to 12:30.
