Contestability in Digital Markets: the role of essential data
Data are playing an increasingly important role in the business models of digital platforms. Recent policy reports have highlighted the importance of data openness and access to data to ensure the contestability of digital markets. However, platforms’ reliance on data varies greatly and so does the types of data.
Any obligations to impose data access and openness should be very carefully designed. It should take into account the characteristics and features of the case at hand as well as the effects on incentives to invest and innovate in data collection, storage and analysis.
The results of CERRE’s research project ‘Contestability in digital markets: the role of essential data’ will be presented and debated at this webinar. This report builds on previous CERRE projects related to data policies. It provides an in-depth analysis of the recent policy proposals calling for more data openness and access to data. Researchers have examined the conditions under which data openness and access is necessary to ensure market contestability.
During the webinar, they will provide insights as to potential remedies and the role of competition policy as well as on the possible role of different modes of regulation (self-, co- and hard regulation).
